Rhagodia hastata (commonly known as Saltbush, Berry Saltbush, or Saloop) is a hardy, evergreen shrub native to coastal and inland regions of eastern Australia.
It’s very popular in South African gardens (especially in the Western Cape, where you are in Cape Town) because of its excellent drought tolerance, salt resistance, and low-maintenance nature — perfect for water-wise / xeriscape landscaping in sunny, dry, or coastal conditions.
Key characteristics
Foliage — Striking silvery-grey (sometimes described as silver-green) leaves that provide strong contrast in the garden. The foliage can take on reddish tones before older leaves drop.
Growth habit — Rounded shrub; can reach up to ~2 m tall and wide if left unpruned, but spreads prolifically and produces runners in some forms. Many modern cultivars are more compact and clump-forming (less invasive/spreading).
Flowers & fruit — Small, inconspicuous yellow flowers in summer, followed by red berries in some varieties (hence “berry saltbush”).
Uses in gardens:
Excellent for hedging (formal clipped or informal)
Shaped topiaries or balls (“Miniball” cultivars are popular for this)
Mass planting, groundcover, borders, or screens
Fire-retardant properties and good at suppressing weeds
Thrives in poor, sandy, or saline soils where many other plants struggle
